More than one trip to Georgia will not be complete without visiting the capital of this country - Tbilisi (Tbilisi). This beautiful Caucasian town delights tourists with its sights and delicious traditional food. To leave unforgettable emotions and impressions on the trip, cafes, khinkal and restaurants of the city offer guests to taste dishes of national Georgian cuisine. Expensive and budget establishments, cook equally tasty. Eating hearty and inexpensive, or expensive and luxurious, is everyone's personal choice. There are many catering establishments of various price segments in Tbilisi.

This article provides a list of places where you can eat deliciously in Tbilisi. The review begins with budget places, the food in which will delight with its taste and quality, and the price list with average prices will pleasantly surprise the visitor.

Caucasian cuisine restaurant Khinkali House

Khinkali House, according to visitors' reviews, offers the most in Tbilisi. In addition, the restaurant menu offers a large selection of various Georgian dishes: kupaty, kuchmachi, chakupuli, soups, salads, meat and much more. Here you can have a delicious dinner, drink good wine or beer, listen to live music, and if you wish, while away the night until the morning, since the restaurant is open around the clock.

The friendly staff of the restaurant happily opens the doors for their guests, communicates freely with them in Russian. For those who are not very familiar with Georgian cuisine, waiters diligently help to choose the most delicious dishes, taking into account their wishes.

In the evening, the restaurant is cheerful and noisy in Georgian style. The two large rooms fill up instantly with guests. Dancing and cheerful atmosphere reigns until the early morning. The middle price segment, large portions and delicious food, everything a modern tourist needs.

Khinkali House is located at the address: Tbilisi, Rustaveli Avenue, 37.

Machakhela

Machakhela is a chain of Georgian cafes. There are several of them in Tbilisi, the most famous are located on Rustaveli Street and Freedom Square. The most popular is the one that is located in the old town on the square. This is a three-storey building with a street veranda from which the Metekhi Church and the rest of the historical part of the city are clearly visible.

The specialty of the cafe is. The fillings and recipes for this dish are varied. Here, probably, all the recipes for khachapuri that are known are collected: with cheese, with cheese and green onions, with vegetables, with meat, Megrelian recipe, Adjarian recipe, Imeretian recipe, etc. In addition to him, the menu offers all food options: first, second, salads, drinks and desserts. A large selection of khinkali and many other Georgian dishes are presented. Ojakhuri is a very tasty dish in this cafe. This is a roast of meat and potatoes, with onions and Georgian spices.

Excursions in the old city involve long walks, so it is very convenient to drop in to Samikitno Machakhela for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You do not have to waste time on the road, as the cafe is within walking distance. By the way, having decided to have breakfast in this institution, order Turkish coffee, it is brewed amazingly here.

Samikitno Machakhela is located at the address: Tbilisi, Mosashvili, 11

Reviews of tourists indicate that this is a very good khinkalnaya. At least, after reading the recommendations of tourists who dropped in here for lunch or dinner, having gone to have breakfast once personally at Velyaminov's, we fully support the opinion that the food here is really delicious.

In the cafe near Velyaminov, the menu offers various Georgian delicacies, including homemade pickles. Meat dishes, amazing khinkali, chakapuli, soups, Georgian flatbread, national drinks - everything is tasty, satisfying and inexpensive.

The cafe is located in the basement. I must say that, like in most Georgian cafes and restaurants, smoking is allowed here. Since the room is closed and ventilation does not work very well, smoke instantly penetrates things and hair. This option will not suit a family with a child unambiguously.

The service is not at the highest level, but the taste of the dishes instantly makes up for all the disadvantages. It should be added that locals also come here to eat - this is a good indicator of the quality of food. The local population says that it is in the Velyaminov cafe that the best khinkali in Tbilisi are prepared.

Khinkalnaya Velyaminov location address: Tbilisi, Dadiani street, 8

One of the best restaurants in Tbilisi. It is the perfect place to go out for dinner with the whole family. The beautiful interior is cozy at home. Along with the usual rectangular tables and wooden chairs, there are many elements that add luxury to the restaurant. Beautiful furniture, white tablecloths, good lighting, delicious food, live music give a very emotional rest.

The chef personally visits the guests of the restaurant to help them decide on the choice of dishes and choose the right wines for them. And if he's lucky, he will also treat you to chacha. Unusually delicious desserts are prepared in Sakhli, which the chef will also tell you about in detail and will take your order.

Compared to other establishments in Tbilisi, the service here is top notch. The waiters speak Russian quite well. Fast and friendly.

Prices are above average, but this is quite logical, the level of the restaurant in Tbilisi is high. It is one of the ten best restaurants in Tbilisi. If you decide: “We will sing and relax today mentally and on a grand scale!”, Then you must come here. This is a very worthy place.

Sakhli restaurant locations address: Tbilisi, G. Tabidze St., 1

The restaurant is a “specialty” of Tbilisi. It is located at a height from which a beautiful view of the city and all the historical sites of Tbilisi opens up. It is possible to get into it only by funicular.

The undoubted advantage of the Funicular is the high quality of the offered dishes, each of which is prepared and served in such a way as not only to tasty feed, but also to surprise the guests. All chefs are truly masters of their craft. The menu includes dishes of national and European cuisine. Here you can taste both traditional khinkali and exquisite delicacies in the form of young lamb, veal and many other dishes.

The restaurant itself is expensive. But in return for this, you will receive amazing impressions that will become, perhaps even one of the main memories of Georgia. The restaurant is of European level, so foreign citizens are very frequent guests here.

Address: Tbilisi, Chonkadze, 0114

A well-known restaurant located near the airport. In appearance, it is not very noticeable, so not everyone can know that politicians, stars and other famous personalities are frequent guests of this restaurant. It is always crowded here, so if you decide to visit this legendary place, book your table in advance.

The restaurant menu changes depending on the season. It always has a rich selection of food and drinks. Its products are provided by its own farm, everything from greens to quail meat is grown on it.

It is probably impossible to single out one special dish. All food served by the restaurant chef is considered to be gourmet cuisine.

Meat on fire with a smoke, thin khachapuri with different types of cheese, fish, stewed kid - all these delicacies can be enumerated endlessly. Better to try and see once.

Probably everyone, traveling around any city, had a snack on the street at least once. You won't have to wonder where to eat in Tbilisi for a long time. Here, street stalls and display cases where you can buy food inexpensively are presented everywhere. The aromatic smell of delicious baked goods is literally everywhere, so it is simply impossible to pass by these eateries. It should be said that local residents actively buy the same flat cakes and khachapuri from street vendors, without fear of any unpleasant consequences, after eating this food. On every corner there are stalls with shawarma, khachapuri and other goodies, so while walking around Tbilisi you can eat along the way and completely do without restaurants and cafes.

You can also drink on the streets, and not ordinary cola or water, but real Georgian lemonade or buy coffee from a mobile coffee shop. Such a service as making a glass of freshly squeezed pomegranate juice is also widespread in the streets of Tbilisi. The seller is with you to peel the pomegranate, squeeze out and treat you with the most useful juice, for a certain cost, of course. Not only pomegranate juice is available for drinking in a public place. On the street you can freely buy good, homemade, Georgian wine and even drink.

Vendors of fresh vegetables and fruits stand right on the sidewalks, which you can eat for adults and children. Stalls with churchkhela, marshmallow, nuts can also serve as a snack for children, it is useful and very loved by kids.

Snacks on the run can also be delicious, cheap and convenient. Just by the smell alone, it already becomes tasty, what you are just going to buy. You don't have to wait long for your order, as is the case in crowded restaurants and cafes, especially during lunch and dinner. So you can save time and spend it on walks, seeing the sights of Tbilisi.

Where to have breakfast in Tbilisi

Cafes and other catering establishments in Tbilisi open on average at 10-11 hours. Georgians are a people who like to sleep and do not like to rush. Therefore, the issue of an early breakfast for tourists who habitually wake up at sunrise should be decided in advance. It's not very pleasant to wake up at seven in the morning and wait for the nearest cafes to open. Hunger is not an aunt. The caffeine that I work from 8-9 in the morning in Tbilisi is not a lot. If the place where you have already dined can be replaced with another, then with breakfast it is a little more complicated. You will have to go for breakfast every day to one institution closest to the hotel. Finding a place to eat early is a very common problem for tourists. To make it easier for you to find a cafe for breakfast, we have provided a list of morning caffeine with a brief description of the menu. The food in the morning cafes in Tbilisi is decent.

Opens at 8-00 am. Here you will be offered a crunchy croissant and aromatic coffee. Suitable for a light breakfast for those who wake up early.

Location: Tbilisi, Mtkvari street, 2

The institution is open from 9-00. The menu includes both light breakfasts, in the form of curd cheesecakes, and hearty dishes in the form of pasta, hinckley and scrambled eggs. From drinks coffee, tea, chocolate. Also a great place to have an early breakfast.

Tbilisi, Tsintsadze 12

This is the smallest coffee shop in the city. It opens at 9-00 am. Nice and friendly staff who will serve you a delicious breakfast and fill you with positive emotions for the whole day. Breakfast includes sandwiches, chocolate muffins, aromatic coffee, homemade creme brulee, smoothies and more, which will serve as a complete and healthy breakfast.

Tbilisi, Chavchavadze avenue 22

Opens at 8-00 am. Pastries, juices, coffee are prepared for breakfast. In addition, complete meals can be ordered. Smoking is prohibited in the establishment.

Tbilisi, Melikishvili 21

Information for tourists who travel to Tbilisi for the first time:

  • smoking is allowed in almost all cafes and restaurants in Tbilisi
  • 10% tip is included in the bill
  • payment by bank cards is available
  • the invoices are registered in Georgian, so as not to get confused, take a picture of the names of the dishes and their prices.

Summing up, I would like to note that in Tbilisi they are very sensitive to the traditions of feasts and refreshments. Food, even in street stalls, is prepared with special trepidation, which is probably why it is so delicious.

There are enough cafes and restaurants in Tbilisi and every guest will find a place within his or her pocket. All have their pros and cons. You shouldn't stop at one place. Believe me, the more places you visit, the more impressions you will have from your trip.

The cult of food in Georgia is incredibly well developed, so 99 out of 100 tourists who come to the capital of this hospitable country wonder where are the best restaurants in Tbilisi? I will answer honestly: how many people, so many opinions, and probably almost every traveler who has been here has his own rating of restaurants. Therefore, the list of restaurants in Tbilisi below is my subjective assessment, based primarily on my impressions of the food and drinks served. I will also dwell on the most-most food outlets, which are most often noted by both ordinary tourists and professional critics.

Briefly about Tbilisi restaurants

To begin with, a few important information about Georgian and, in particular, Tbilisi cuisine.

  1. The difference in prices in the city's restaurants is very insignificant and is due to the presence of tourists (if there were no visitors, the dishes would generally cost the same, because economically and socially society in Georgia is very weakly stratified).
  2. There are no uniform rules and standards for food preparation in Georgia. If you are looking for where to eat in Tbilisi for the first time, then with equal probability you can find yourself both in a restaurant with delicious cuisine and in a rather mediocre establishment. But most often there are intermediate types with satisfactory food quality.
  3. You can find both establishments with a show program and classic restaurants. In the first, it is more expensive.
  4. Regional Georgian dishes are best prepared in the regional restaurants of Tbilisi.
  5. The check will almost always include a 10% service charge (i.e. tip). Sometimes it is 15%, sometimes all 20%.

Well, now let's see where to eat deliciously in Tbilisi.

Actually, the restaurant "In the shadow of Metekhi" (Tbilisi) is located not by chance - the area and the Metekhi rock are really close. But on the stunning views of Tbilisi and the vicinity of the historical center, the bright features of the institution end there. The restaurant positions itself as a classic national, and this is really so, but many similar colorful establishments are scattered throughout the capital of Georgia. And to get into the rating of "The best restaurants in Tbilisi", one color (and there is, however, enough here - the very thing for tourists who want to get to know the culture of Georgia better) is not enough. The main advantage of the restaurant "In the shadow of Metekhi" is its cuisine. The cooks' dishes are really delicious, the portions are quite voluminous, but the prices correspond - here it is a little more expensive than the average in the city (60-70 GEL will be the average bill for a dinner with wine).

The entertainment and program of the evening in the restaurant are similar and familiar. From 18:00 live music starts playing, which will not stop until the last client. You can also listen to the performances of Georgians from the glazed veranda, but for those who want to relax without loud music, I would advise you to sit at the farthest end of this hall. From about 20:00 to 22:00, visitors are delighted with their programs by dancers, bright and lively, ready to take to their dance any willing (preferably sober) guest of the restaurant. The restaurant's cuisine is mainly Georgian, but there are also classic European dishes. The staff speaks three languages, and waiters serve 6 rooms: from the main one for 160 people to the chamber "Asian" one for only 6 visitors.

Restaurant "Taglaura" in Tbilisi

This is a whole chain of restaurants in the capital of Georgia, which includes four food outlets:

  • Gulia street, 1, near the bus station "Ortachala". Routes 19, 50, 55, 71, 101 go here, and relatively close there is the Isani metro stop.
  • Kostava street, 77, next to the Vakhushti bridge. A few blocks to the west is the Tekhnicheskiy Universitet metro stop, and across the bridge is the Tsereteli metro station.
  • Beliashvili street, next to the Morphological Institute. To the stop "Beliashvili Street, 14" there is a bus route # 121.
  • Okrokana road, on the south-western exit from the city. This is followed by either intercity minibuses or personal transport ().

The Taglaura restaurant (Tbilisi) is a rare case of the synthesis of Western and Eastern culture. Firstly, it is a chain restaurant, that is, it is already positioning itself not as a unique and unique building. Secondly, Taglaura, like the two previous restaurants, is distinguished by a high concentration of Georgian flavor in the exterior, interior, cuisine and service. The halls are decorated in a folk style, the main dishes are national (khinkali, shashlik, khachapuri). Thirdly, the chain of restaurants approaches visitors in a Western-style, in this restaurant the influence of American and European cultures on Georgia is best seen.

From the restaurant's dishes, you should definitely try cheap and delicious khinkali of different types and with different fillings (from 50 tetri apiece), fresh local bread and lemonade, classic meat shish kebab, which is brought from the villages every day! Considering these facts and the large (as for Georgia) number of chain establishments, you now know exactly where to eat in Tbilisi :).

Wine culture is less developed in Taglaur, but you can try it here as well. But brewing and drinking beer in these restaurants is incredibly popular. So, as many as two points are equipped with their own small brewery, which allows you to create a fresh and high-quality product right on the spot. The most famous is the brewery in the restaurant near Ortachala station, which serves both light and dark beer. The average cost of a check for lunch or dinner is significantly lower than in popular and pretentious restaurants - 20-30 GEL.

Other restaurants in Tbilisi

Here I will list some places worth seeing, including some interesting restaurants in Tbilisi with live music:

"Racha dukhan" is a folk semi-basement restaurant located at the intersection of Lermontov and Dadiani streets. It is known for the only Abkhazuri in Tbilisi (spicy veal or pork sausages in a pork net).

"Zakhar Zakharych" is one of the few restaurants where indigenous townspeople also go. Here are the best khinkali in Tbilisi of 10 different types (meat ones cost from 80 tetri apiece). It is located almost under the Dry Bridge.

"Phaeton" - the main competitor of "Melnitsa" is also located along Beliashvili Street, a little further than the already mentioned restaurant. Pretentious and exclusive, relying on the flavor of Georgia. But it's delicious here, albeit a little expensive.

"Samikitno - Machakhela" is the best (in my opinion) restaurant in Tbilisi in the format of a chain (only Taglaura can compete with it). Although, in fact, these two networks (three, if we single out Machakhela, which is positioned as a network of khachapurnye) belong to the same company. Regional Adjarian restaurants are located throughout the city, and the main one is in the heart of the Old City - on Maidan or Meidan (Vakhtang Gorgasala Square). Here they make real Adjarian khachapuri, delicious khinkali. The average bill for a hearty snack is 15 GEL.

"Samikitno - Machakhela" - there are several restaurants of this chain in Tbilisi, most often those that are located on Freedom Square and Vakhtang Gorgasala Square are visited. It is noteworthy that the reviews about them (in comparison with each other) can be found diametrically opposite. Someone argues that the best restaurant of the chain is located on Freedom Square, while on Meydan the establishment is mediocre. Others, on the contrary, insist that there is nothing to do in the Samikitno restaurant on Freedom Square. Personally, I liked Machakhela on Vakhtang Gorgasal Square more. There are often no seats there, and the waiters may not seem very smiling and polite, but remember that you are in Georgia.

By the way, over the past year, you can often find negative reviews about the network. Like, they began to work without a soul, everything was put on stream. Please share your feedback after visiting the restaurant.

This post is about those places, the names of which will say little to people who have not been to Tbilisi. However, it is they who can safely claim the title of restaurants, where you should definitely look in being in the status of a guest of the Georgian capital. This is not just a list of restaurants where I have eaten. This is a list of restaurants that, in comparison with other establishments, are somewhat better than their competitors. The list is constantly replenished / adjusted as new experiences and new establishments appear. Bookmark the post.

It's important to know

  • Now, if you want to try real Georgian cuisine and not be disappointed, you will have to move further from the center. And pay more;
  • First, they bring an empty plate with cutlery, and then the dishes themselves;
  • Tips are already included in the bill almost everywhere (i.e. we add tips to the prices in the menu). As a rule, this is 10%. In the popular among tourists Samikitno on Meydan Square 15%;
  • Many fashionable establishments (Cafe Stamba, Shavi Lomi) have gone even further, introducing the practice of adding the so-called. "VAT" in the amount of 18%, which visitors will learn about only at the stage of payment;
  • Bills are brought exclusively in Georgian. Afraid of being cheated? Then it is better to photograph the prices of what was ordered on the phone, so that later there will be no questions;
  • Accepted everywhere.

"Lagidze Waters" on Rustaveli

I learned about the existence of this place purely by chance from the indigenous inhabitants of Tbilisi. “Lagidze Waters”, I'm not afraid of this word, is a real Georgian brand, which at one time made both American presidents and Soviet secretaries general admire. The best place to touch the history of the drink is here, on Rustaveli. Legendary drinks (or rather syrups for them) were invented by Mitrofan Lagidze in 1887 and since then have been an integral part of Georgian history. They were so good that even at the historic Yalta conference in 1945, there were bottles with Lagidze Waters on the tables, and Franklin Roosevelt, who tasted this wonderful drink, took as many as two thousand bottles with him to America. In turn, Harry Truman was interested in whether it is possible to arrange the supply of lemonade directly to the United States? Ironically, many years later, the great-grandson of Mitrofan Lagidze Vakhtang became the chief technologist and vice-president at one of the lemonade factories in Tbilisi, where the production of Coca-Cola was established.

I advise you to order a creamy one - it is the most delicious! Khachapuri in Adjarian or Imeretian should also be nothing. The visitors are mostly local, the interior is Soviet.

The prices are very affordable: a large Imeretian-style khachapuri - 7.5 GEL, a small Adjarian-style khachapuri - 7.9 GEL, a glass of Lagidze water (300 ml.) - 1.5 GEL. Opening hours from 10:00 to 22:00. Bank cards are also accepted for payment. It seems like there is Wi-Fi, but I could not connect.

Make an order at the checkout

Having made an order, you can sit down at any free table and wait for food to be brought to you while sipping creamy lemonade. Number on the table for the waiter.

Georgians love to drink Lagidze by mixing both lemonades in one glass. You will take a closer look here. Many (if not all) locals do just that. This was once told to me by a local who I found on Tripster.

"Lagidze Waters" at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity

It is located on the territory of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, and therefore it makes sense to go here after visiting the cathedral. The food here is delicious. The legendary drink for my taste is somewhat different from what is poured in Lagidze on Rustaveli. It tastes better here. The best order is creamy. You can order lemonade with you - it will be poured into a plastic liter bottle. Pretty cool afterwards to go and drink lemonade while hiking. Especially the children should like it. It is in the new Lagidze that you should definitely try Adjarian khachapuri. Here he is one of the best that I have tried in Tbilisi.

Prices are higher than in Lagidze on Rustaveli, but I would not call them biting either. A small Imeretian khachapuri 4 GEL, a small Adjarian khachapuri 8.5 GEL (pictured), a glass of Lagidze water (250 ml.) 2 GEL, a liter bottle 5 GEL. Opening hours from 10:00 to 22:00. Bank cards are also accepted for payment. There is normal Wi-Fi. Delivery costs 5 GEL, call tel. 2-47-77-57.

Samikitno Restaurant

It is not in my rules to openly abuse the institution. Anything can happen and not always this "everyone" depends on the institution itself. But, here Samikitno is a direct failure. And complete. But it was once a good restaurant. Time on the phone is the time that I wasted waiting for my tasteless khinkali. And this despite the fact that it was daytime, the restaurant was about 60% full, and khinkali in such establishments have not been molded by hand for a long time. Draw conclusions.

Why is it on my list? It's simple. This is the largest chain of restaurants in Tbilisi, which every now and then will come across on the way and where, in the end, every traveler will go. Well, almost everyone. It's just that now your expectations will not be greatly overestimated.

Prices are among the lowest in the city. The average price for one khinkali is 0.7-0.8 lari. Payment by card is possible. A tip of 10% (and 15% on Meydan Square) will be included in the invoice plus the amount of the order.

Bad khinkali

The Keto & Kote restaurant can be called exactly the opposite in terms of prices and quality to the aforementioned Samikitno. A very cozy place, the entrance to which will be found from the third time. For the readers of my blog, everything is much easier - on the map at the end of the article, there is a route that will take you straight to the place. If it's a fine day, feel free to sit down on the summer veranda, where it is so nice to admire the view of the city and the magnolias blooming here. I would venture to recommend cheese khinkali. I liked it.

Prices are above average. You will have to pay 17 GEL for a portion of khinkali (pictured). Tipping is at the discretion of visitors. "Fashion" tax, the so-called "VAT" is not here yet.

Cheese khinkali

Pasanauri

I would call it a kind of golden mean. Firstly, it is located in the very center, a stone's throw from Meydan Square. Secondly, they still cook well. Thirdly, the prices are quite reasonable. Fourthly, normal, quite friendly staff. And finally, fifthly, I came here on the advice of one of the coolest - Aishat. As you can imagine, my expectations were met.

The prices are average. Accept cards. The main thing is that it works around the clock.

If you walk along the street. Agmashenebeli, then Shavi lomi is the first place where you should look in search of a place to eat properly. Shavi lomi means "black lion" in Georgian. Many already know about it, but the flow of tourists is still not enough for a black lion to turn from a cozy family cafe into a shabby cat. Try to order a chihirhythm. It tasted good to me.

The prices are average. Tipping is at the discretion of visitors. However, it is here that the notorious 18% is added to the cost of the dishes, which I am not a word about in the menu.

Cafe "Old Generation"

This is an authentic place filled with the love of its creators, which you will definitely come across while walking along the Wine Descent. It's just a crime not to come here! A small room with stone walls, hung with various old Georgian attributes of life, found almost the time of Vakhtang Gorgasali. The owner managed to transform her brainchild from an inconspicuous family cafe into a real cult place. Although until now only very experienced and sophisticated travelers can be found there. The coffee is brewed according to some "secret" recipe and looks like irish coffee. I was here with my Iranian friends and everyone was absolutely delighted.

Honestly, I don’t remember the price. The Iranians treated me, flatly refused to take money from me. In my opinion, coffee cost about 6 GEL. They paid exactly in cash.

For desserts, it is not applicable here. Want some traditional coffee? - also in Luca Polare. My favorite set: espresso, a scoop of Coffee ice cream (this is one of the types of ice cream to choose from) and some water (not everywhere espresso is served with water, although this is how it should be served).

Prices: Espresso 3.5 GEL, cappuccino 4.9 GEL, American 4.3 GEL. Ice cream ball 3 GEL. Opening hours: 08:00 to 02:00. Among other things, cards are accepted for payment.

PurPur

Many people know and quite justifiably write laudatory reviews about this institution. It's called PurPur. But, not many people know what exactly is worth ordering here. It is in this place that you should try a cool and not trivial dessert - baked quince.

Baked quince

Despite the fact that there are a huge number of Georgian restaurants in St. Petersburg, and I have already tried many of the dishes, I understood how delicious the local cuisine is in Georgia. During the two weeks that I was here, I ate not when I felt like it, but as soon as I left the previous meal: everything was so tasty and interesting that it was almost impossible to stop. Fortunately, by the standards of Russia, even the coolest restaurants in Tbilisi are very inexpensive.

In this post I will try to answer the question of one millionth: where is it tasty to eat in Tbilisi? As in the post about food in Petrozavodsk, this is not a rating, but a chronology of places that I managed to remember in the order of their visit. In fact, you can safely go to any institution - the food will be excellent almost everywhere, so here are more likely to be remembered for their atmosphere or service, or with which pleasant memories are associated.

Khinkali house - the most delicious khinkali in Tbilisi

Either because it was the first evening and a restaurant I visited in Tbilisi, or because the place was found absolutely by accident - but the khinkali that I tasted here were the most delicious in the entire Georgian trip. Those. at least the best of 6 types that I ate in different cities.

The place is located in the basement of a house on the central Rustaveli Avenue. Frankly, I did not expect anything from khinkali at all - dumplings and dumplings, but in Georgia I absolutely changed my mind. And several vivid impressions of the trip are associated with them: for example, I was struck by the round-the-clock delivery of khinkali in Batumi. It's like pizza or sushi that you order at 2 am, but delicious and hot khinkali. Well, okay, something I digress.

O, Moda, Moda - showroom cafe

One of the main discoveries in Tbilisi is the abundance of hipster places. And hipster in a good way - not in those where you want to sink into the ground or walk with a facepalm, but cozy, with a beautiful semi-antique setting, thought out in detail. The first place I was like was O, Moda, Moda. It is a market of women's jewelry, accessories and other cute little things, combined with a cafe. We came here, having gorged on khachapuri in one of the no-name establishments, which I will not write about here (in any of them it will be guaranteed tasty), so we drank only homemade wine here (not tasty, by the way). But I am sure that you should definitely come here with an empty stomach, at least to sit at cozy tables on the street and eat a dessert (relatively expensive by the standards of food prices in Tbilisi).

Cafe Kala - where to eat in the old town of Tbilisi

Saakashvili has earned a little love, at least for the restoration of the center of the old city (and the reconstruction of Sighnaghi, which I will write about later). There is also a small pedestrian street in old Tbilisi, on which there is a pleasant cafe with a large number of tables brought out into the open air. It is very pleasant to eat and relax here after walking in the center, which can be very exhausting due to the hilly Tbilisi. Prices are also slightly higher than the average for the city (and still much cheaper than in Russia).

Zakhar Zakharych - very tasty and inexpensive

When choosing where to eat in Tbilisi, I followed a simple principle: every time it should be a new establishment. There are so many places in Georgia where you can eat deliciously that it seemed like blasphemy to go to the same cafes several times in a row. Zakhar Zakharych was the only exception to the rule. On the last evening, already quite at night, we decided to go there goodbye and drink the wonderful local Rkatsiteli for 240 rubles / liter and eat some wonderful kupats.

Zakhar Zakharych is an ascetic cafe on the embankment, there is no Russian sign here, so I would not have known about its name if not for my Georgian friend. I heard the opinion that here are the most delicious khinkali in the city (they are less here than usual), but have not tried it. But I can say with confidence that the rest of the meat dishes are at their best!

Again, a small digression: the only gastronomic disappointment in Georgia was the barbecue (here mtsvadi). I ate it 5 times in different places, and I can confidently say that my dad cooks better. The only restaurant where he was close to his father's was Zakhar Zakharych. To justify the mtsvadi, I can say that all Georgians, to my question "where is the best place to eat barbecue?", Always answered - "of course at home." None of the locals eat it in public catering, which is understandable in principle. But if you decide, like me, to close the barbecue gestalt - Zakhar Zakharych will be a great place for this.

Leila is a lovely vegetarian cafe

I already wrote on a blog how I liked the vegetarian cafes in Vietnam, despite the fact that I really love meat. Leila cafe in Tbilisi made no less impression on me. Georgia is a Christian country, here a large percentage of people observe fasting. And how will a Georgian eat tasteless and bland food at this time? Of course not, so Georgian cuisine offers a huge number of delicious dishes without the use of meat: mchadi, lobiani, pkhali mamalyga (yes, I know that this is rather Moldovan, but here it is held in high esteem) and much, much more. After Georgia, I still have questions about Russian cuisine, which practically leaves people with no choice of delicious dishes during Lent.
There are also very interesting drinks in the cafe: tinctures, vodka and compote with quince. And there is also a very beautiful ceiling. The photo is clickable.

Ezo - very youthful and interesting

Another crowded place designed primarily for young people. I was the only non-Georgian, so they could not serve me for half an hour, the waiters literally shied away. In the process of ordering, both parties decided to switch to English 🙂 However, this did not stop later from not coming to me for the entire time, and the bill had to be requested through the visitors. It's nice enough that the young man realized that he had screwed up, and removed the tip cup as soon as I paid with the card.
I think I was out of luck by accident, so I recommend the place. Crowded, interesting interior and good atmosphere. The food is delicious and very large portions, I could not finish the ordered Kuchmachi.

Machakhela - a network of khachapurns

Machakhela is a chain of khachapurns, the most famous of which is located on the square near the old city. I was in another place, the mark on the map is very approximate. But if you walk along the main pedestrian street in the old town, you will definitely see this place. The first Adjarian khachapuri I ate in Batumi. I wanted it earlier, but my friend said that it was an Adjarian dish and should be tried in the capital of the region. How right she was! A very tasty dish that many people master entirely for the first time in their lives. So it happened to me: in Batumi I ate whole khachapuri, but here I could not :). However, in Adjara, it must be admitted, it was tastier, but here, too, very even.

Pasanauri - as it should be in a Georgian cafe

Nice place in a modern center. We wanted to get here on the first evening, but there were no tables, which indicates the popularity of the restaurant. Then I went to Pasanauri in the afternoon. Excellent Georgian menu, average prices, delicious food. Everything is as it should be.

PurPur is the most beautiful restaurant I've ever been to

The PurPur restaurant is located on the second floor of a residential building. Finding it is not an easy task, I have not seen a single sign. Therefore, it is quite difficult to accidentally wander here. And this is no coincidence, the interior of the restaurant is created in such a way as if you come to visit aristocratic friends from the last century or to a cozy communal apartment (before that it was). Every detail of the interior is thought out and impressive. Lighted candles and classical music enhance the atmosphere.
The menu is completely European and one of the most expensive in Tbilisi. But this does not spoil the impression - it is worth coming here to drink wine (it is cheaper than coffee) and enjoy the look. They say that the President of Georgia often comes here. To summarize, this is an amazing place to add to your lists to visit.

There are some minor problems - the coffee menu does not shine with its originality, consider yourself lucky if you stumbled upon a good cappuccino or raff (probably only 1-2 coffee houses serve it here). Georgians mostly drink Turkish coffee or instant coffee, which is why Jacobs and Nescafe have launched great marketing activities here. Yes, and the well-being of the population affects: the majority do not have time for coffee in cafes. Don't look for Starbucks, it is not here and does not plan to appear on their official statement. But no, the information update from March 2017 - they are planning to open! Moreover, Starbucks plans to create a "regional hub" in Tbilisi and open a coffee processing plant, and even a museum.

If Georgian cuisine is delicious almost everywhere, then it is better to choose the places for coffee time in advance. There are coffee shops where it is expensive and not worth it. However, compared to the fairly low prices for the main meal, the price of coffee is not discounted. We have compiled a list of coffee houses for you to enjoy your invigorating cappuccino and be satisfied.

You will most likely want to rest after walks in the center and have a cup or two when you are in the center of Tbilisi, in this case we recommend you the following coffee shops:
